Holiday park in Damp - modernised with Uzin

The holiday park in Damp has invested 75 million marks in the biggest modernisation program of its near 30-year history. The final guests left at the end of October 2000. The modernisation lasted until the start of April 2001. The holiday park on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein celebrated its grand reopening with a new look, modern infrastructure and a new hotel – the Ostseehotel Damp.

The award as a recognised “family-friendly” hotel from the German Hotel and Restaurant Association came at just the right time. The Ostseehotel also received the seal of approval as “particularly suited to business travellers”. Set in the unspoilt countryside of Schleswig-Holstein, the Congress Centre in Damp can accommodate up to 1,000 guests at one time.

Pure manpower
Up to 60 tile fitters were in action on peak daas, and installed 1,000 m² of sealed surfaces in three blocks of 15 storeys each. In order to achieve the necessary manpower, Stefan Gutsche (managing director of Quadrat Fliesen und Marmor) fell back on other fitting companies who then assisted in the completion of the project.

In total, his team installed 6,000 m² of ceramic coverings in bathrooms, the reception area and corridors, 1,000 m² of which were sealed.

Sealing measures on the floor

In wet areas, sealing measures are necessary between the top covering and screed. The planners decided on a class III sealing for the wet areas in the Ostseehotel Damp. Firstly, Fliesengrund (tile base) from Uzin was applied – a dispersion primer for mineral substrates. This is dust binding and resilient, improves adhesion and is characterised by excellent water and alkaline resistance.

Uzin joint sealing tape was used to seal off any movement joints, such as corner joints, connection joints and field boundary joints. The self-adhesive nylon fleece sealing tape is an integral part of composite sealing systems, and has high adhesive strength and tear resistance. The joint sealing tape is watertight, resilient and temperature-resistant.

This is followed by the NC 220 dual-component flexible composite sealing system. This plastic-modified cementitious sealing compound enables reliable sealing in combination with ceramic floor coverings. NC 220 is watertight and open to water vapour diffusion, frost and ageing-resistant, flexible and with crack-bridging (up to 20 percent). NC 220 is applied in two sealing layers. A generous amount of sealing compound is scraped onto the substrate, then applied wet-on-wet and worked into a uniform ridge pattern using a 4 mm notched trowel. Immediately after this, the ridge is drawn out to form a closed layer. This process is then repeated after the first layer is dry.

The Fliesurit Flex tile adhesive from Uzin was used as thin-bed mortar. Flex adhesives are flexible adhesive products that compensate for the different expansion coefficients of the screed and ceramic floor covering. This hydraulically-drying, plastic-improved thin-bed mortar meets class C2 TE demands according to DIN EN 12004 and the flex mortar directive. It is characterised by a very high pull-off strength and shear strength. Fliesurit Flex is waterproof and frost-resistant, and can be jointed with the Uzin flex joint after just 24 hours.

10x10 cm mosaic tiles from Vitra were used as the ceramic top surface.

Sealing measures on the wall

A construction according to moisture load class II was selected for installing ceramic tiles on walls in wet areas. This then regulates long-term or recurring loads, such as those in showers and sanitary rooms.

Fliesengrund (tile base) was used again as primer. HS 600 liquid sealant from Uzin was used as an alternative sealing measure against penetrating surface water. This resilient dispersion sealant ensures reliable sealing in two layers. HS 600 dries as the water in the sealant evaporates, leaving a highly resilient, water-tight surface seal with high adhesive integrity. Ceramic coverings can then be installed directly on this surface.

The 15x15 cm wall tiles from Villeroy & Boch were installed with the Fliesurit Plus tile adhesive. This plastic-improved thin-bed mortar has a high pull-off strength and shear strength, is waterproof and frost-resistant, and offers higher coverage through the increased addition of water. The ceramic covering can be jointed with the Uzin flex joint after just one day.

Further installation of dust-pressed vitrified tiles

In addition to the installation of ceramic coverings in wet areas, dust-pressed vitrified tiles from Casalgrande were also installed as a wall frieze and on the lift entrances. In total, 6 kilometres of wall frieze were used for the 15 storeys across 3 blocks and 141 lift entrances.

Dust-pressed vitrified tiles are manufactured using the dry-pressing method. Clay is dried, ground and then compressed under very high pressure. Dust-pressed vitrification is characterised by good mechanical properties, high density and very low water absorption.

In order to install the dust-pressed vitrified tiles, the PE 460 dual-component epoxy sealing primer from Uzin was applied first. This moisture-blocking epoxy resin primer blocks, primes, strengthens and seals absorbent and non-absorbent substrates in one. The extremely versatile PE 460 sealing primer has proven itself especially in problematic applications, such as cement substrates with ground moisture contact and in applications with insufficient drying. PE 460 is applied in two layers.

In order to achieve a primer base for the mortar, a generous quantity of Uzin quartz sand must be intermingled across the entire surface while the second layer is still wet. The quartz sand can be vacuumed off 12 to 24 hours after sand was applied to the second PE 460 layer.

In order to install dust-pressed vitrified tiles, the Uzin Application Technology department recommends using the specially developed dust-pressed vitrification mortar. However, some tile fitters still prefer using low-slump mortars instead of fluid mortars. Therefore, the dust-pressed vitrified tiles in this project were installed with Fliesurit Plus tile adhesive enhanced with PE 530 flex dispersion.

By using the PE 530 special dispersion from Uzin, the Fliesurit Plus thin-bed mortar is enhanced and made water-repellent with increased flexibility. PE 530 is a highly concentrated aqueous special dispersion that is added to the mixing water. PE 530 improves the processing consistency, wetting capabilities and stickiness of the thin-bed mortar. The adhesive strength is then improved, stresses are reduced and tendencies towards vibrations are minimised. Depending on the added amount, the mortar bed is made waterproof or watertight, making it also suitable for installing dust-pressed vitrified tiles. After the tiles have been inserted and pressed down into the adhesive bed under light rotation, the ceramic covering can be jointed with flex joints after just one day.

Dust-pressed vitrified tiles were also used in the entire entrance area, covering a total of 600 m². The highlight in the entrance hall is the inlaid night sky design on the floor. In order to do this, holes were drilled in the tiles and equipped with small lights. The dust-pressed vitrified tiles were then installed in the same way as for the wall frieze and lift entrances.

Information on the installation company

“Quadrat Fliesen und Marmor” was founded in 1992 by the master tiler Stefan Gutsche. The company now employs 13 staff. Stefan Gutsche distributes and installs exclusive materials. 40% of sales are generated from private residential areas, with the remaining 60% coming from commercial areas. In commercial areas, the company primarily deals with many public or semi-public projects, such as banks and municipal facilities.
